Guide to Installing a Car Battery

Car batteries are not perpetual. Eventually you will need to replace them if you don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a car that will not start. Before installing a car battery, however, you need to consider few things. But, you'll be glad to know that installing a car battery is easier than you might think.

Before anything else, be sure to keep your car manual handy in case you need it. You want to look for the specifications of your battery because you need them when replacing the original equipment manufacturer battery that's preinstalled in your car. The numbers you need to remember are the CCA (cold cracking amps), RC (reserve capacity, measured in minutes), and the GROUP code. These numbers are also available on the top of your battery but they can become illegible through time. You want to replace your car battery with one that has at least equal CCA rating, and you want the RC rating as high as possible. And you want the group code to be the same as your previous battery.

Once you have gotten the right battery for your car, you're now ready to install your new battery.

Before uninstalling your old car battery, remember the orientation of the terminals so that you can orient your new battery right in the beginning. Installing a car battery begins with unscrewing the battery straps and taking out the negative terminal before the positive terminal of your old battery. You need a wrench and a screw driver to do these. Now that the old battery is loose, you can take it out and replace the new one remembering to place them oriented the same way as the old one.

Before replacing the new one, however, clean the battery tray and clamps from rust that forms naturally. You can use baking soda paste and metal brush for this purpose. Find the terminal cables and clamps then reattach the positive cable to the positive battery terminal first and then the negative one. Secure the battery with the battery straps making sure that it will not wobble if you wiggle it. Once done, your car should start in a flash.

Installing a car battery is easier than you might think. Anyone who can lift the battery in place can do it even without help from somebody. So the next time your car battery dies, remember the numbers before purchasing your replacement and you can install it anywhere you left your car - hopefully in your garage safe and sound.
